Broncos Notes 7/30

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Denver Post:

Woody Paige takes a guess at the Broncos starting roster of players and mentions the Broncos hired a new director of video operations Steve Scarnecchia. Woody seems to imply the signing is controversial since Scarnecchia worked with the Patriots video staff from 2001-2004 and the Jets for the last three years. Two years ago a Patriots assistant was caught illegally taping Jets defensive signals and “Scarnecchia’s name came up.” Sounds a bit more like a slow news day.

Paige also offers advice on what to look for during camp and how to approach players for autographs in his mailbag segment.

Lindsay Jones reports the Broncos early depth chart positions will remain very fluid with starters rotating in the morning and afternoon workouts. Players coming off injuries D.J. Williams and Brandon Marshall were held out from another day of practice.

Jeff Legwold looks at of rookie Center Blake Schlueter’s rise from small town life to the NFL. Schlueter is listed at 279 pounds, the smallest of the Broncos offensive linemen, but McDaniels described him as a “really strong player, a great athlete at his position, who plays bigger than he is.”

Vikings WR Bobby Wade claims Brian Urlacher called new Bears quarterback Jay Cutler the p word that sounds like wussy in private. Urlacher denies the comment.

CBS4Denver:

A piece on rookie CB Alphonso Smith surfaces at CBS4, the Broncos will give Smith every opportunity to be the versatile player he was in college.

Colorado Springs Gazette:

Frank Schwab reports the Broncos quarterbacks also arrived in camp a week early, in addition to the rookie players.

DenverBroncos.com:

A piece on Tight Ends Richard Quinn and Marquez Branson who became friends before the draft and were both signed by the Broncos. The article also talks about how Josh McDaniels has been happy with Alphonso Smith’s play and attitude thus far and that he’s been pleased with the information retention of the Broncos new quarterbacks.

Ravens Might Revisit Trade for Brandon Marshall

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The state of the Baltimore Ravens wide receiver corps may just be dire enough for the organization to explore a trade for Brandon Marshall according to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports.  While there were rumors in the past that the Ravens may be interested in Marshall, interest seemed to wane as Baltimore signed veteran wide receiver Drew Bennett. However, Bennett decided not to return citing a knee injury. Baltimore also seems to think there’s still a chance Derrick Mason could return if a better contract was offered. But the more his retirement seems likely, perhaps the more inclined they could be to strike a deal with Denver.

My feelings are: give us a 1st round pick and a defensive player, perhaps if a defensive starter is asking too much though, I think I would even take a competent defensive lineman who subs in for them.

Broncos Notes 7/29

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Denver Post:

The Broncos don’t see Brandon Marshall as a distraction and the Post mentions a few other teams that had some success with a disgruntled player on the roster.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels claims the team is apparently happy with their roster and currently has no intentions of meeting with newly reinstated QB Michael Vick.

Jeff Legwold writes on the All Things Broncos Blog that Friday is really the day to have high profile rookies Robert Ayers and Knowshon Moreno’s contracts completed.

CBS4Denver:

An article on Kyle Orton points out it’s the first time in his NFL career to enter training camp as the starting Quarterback.

Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall was held out of the second day of camp due to “residual soreness,” apparently in his hips.

Colorado Springs Gazette:

Reporter Frank Schwab gives us a quick rundown of yesterday’s practice and adds that having rookies report early to camp before the veterans is a change not seen since Dan Reeves’ last year as head coach of Denver in 1992.
