Four Points: The State of the Denver Broncos 10/31/10

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

1. The coach isn’t going anywhere.

I hate to break it to some of yous, but we’re not firing Josh McDaniels. Not yet, and I absolutely doubt we’ll fire him even at the end of this season. I say he gets one more year. One more draft, one more shot at bringing some people in with free agency. 2011 will be the make or break year for Josh McDaniels as head coach. If next year goes down as a failure, then he’ll get fired and he’ll be an offensive coordinator somewhere for five years and maybe get a shot at a head coaching job again after that. You can call it a failure to prepare or what not, but even Mike Shanahan fielded incomplete Broncos teams during his last few seasons. They did some things right and some things wrong, showed up for some games and disappeared in others. Same crap different day. Which brings me to number two:

2. There’s a lot wrong with this team in key areas.

The Broncos running game sucks and it all begins up front. Some people cheered when we resigned Chris Kuper. I wondered why, and figured the Eagles game last year was an anomaly. That was the game where I saw Kuper get picked up and thrown by an Eagles defender. Unbelievable, and no, I was correct: Kuper is a backup. Daniels or whoever we have on the other side at guard is a backup too. We have two guards who are backups. We also have two rookies on the offensive line who are inconsistent, as rookies normally are. We need road graters at the guard position, guys who are run first pas block second. I’m not worried about the talent at running back, a more talented back isn’t going to change anything for us running the ball. I do, however want to see a larger running back replace Correll Buckhalter–he’s too injury prone, doesn’t do enough and we need a big back in short yardage.

The Broncos lost Elvis Dumervil for the season and they also lost Robert Ayers for quite a few games. By losing these two players to injury they lost their entire pass rush. No one else on this team is a threat rushing the passer. Ayers, while not on the level of a Dumervil was the only defender getting consistent pressure out there. I don’t want to see Jarvis Moss on the team next year. Jason Hunter is OK–as a backup. The defense breaks down in the second half of games and I believe it isn’t helped one bit by an offense that continually goes three and out and fails to maintain any drives in the first half. No excuses for some of these breakdowns, but our defense is good not great and we ask too much of them. Actually, it’s a very average defense without Dumervil and Ayers out there. I think inside linebacker, a talented defensive end and a safety for the future are team needs next year. With a few upgrades it can be a good enough defense when healthy, but they ain’t there yet nor are they healthy.

3. Too many penalties, mistakes, undisciplined play.

Yeah, some of this is on the coaching. However, it was the same story in Shanahan’s last couple years here. Same crap different day. Penalties and self inflicted mistakes have been plaguing the Broncos for the last few years now. I don’t know that a head coaching change would be a quick fix, maybe some position and personnel changes. We’re young in many areas, oft injured and the starting player turnover has been very high.

I will say this. Those of you who want Josh McDaniels head on a platter–you ain’t getting it this year. Maybe we shuffle some position coaches, but the Hoodie Jr. gets at least another year.

4. This team needs competition at the quarterback position next year.

All the statistics and all the quarterback ratings in the world don’t matter to me one bit. Wins, our offense converting on third downs and touchdowns matter. This team’s offense has been sucking and part of that is on Kyle Orton. He’s been struggling to move the offense early in games, struggling in key third down situations and misfiring in the red zone. Take today’s game against the 49ers, Orton did a great job in the third quarter didn’t he? Well where was he in the first quarter? The second? Multiple three and outs and zero points on the board at the half? Not even a drive for a field goal?  Sixteen points all game? Stats out the ass and only fourteen points in these games? I’m sick and tired of it.

Some people are missing the point when it comes to criticism of Kyle Orton. Yes, Kyle Orton is playing well overall. Kyle Orton has been playing pretty well this year and most of last year in fact. All of that “playing well” talk matters absolutely nothing when you’re not scoring points. I don’t care that Kyle Orton is playing well. I don’t care what Orton’s stats are. Kyle Orton could throw three interceptions per game with a passer rating of 50, and you know what? I wouldn’t care one bit as long as we’re scoring points and winning games.

Some people believe it’s ludicrous to start Tim Tebow anytime soon. I say we damn well better start him after the next loss. This team is not making the playoffs and one more loss probably makes it one hundred percent official. Some people say Tebow’s not ready, they say we shouldn’t get him injured out there. Are you kidding me? He’s already running with the damn football, this kid better be ready to take NFL lumps. He’s gonna have to sometime. Better to start him in a year where we’re not doing jack squat. Better to bench Orton in a year where he has absolutely nothing to prove to us or anyone else. Couple more points: We probably won’t have any real quarterback competition next year unless Tebow gets actual NFL game experience. If we don’t give Tebow a shot in these meaningless games we also won’t quite know whether we should draft a quarterback next year or not. We’ll be picking high–is the kid we have promising or just special package material?

Let’s see what he’s got and give him some invaluable experience in a crap year, otherwise I want to use that damn high pick on a legitimate quarterback. I’ve lost some faith in Kyle Orton. He’s not clutch, he fails to inspire and when its third down, when its red zone time and the defense stiffens up and clamps down he isn’t getting it done.  The bottom line is this: We are not winning games or scoring points with Kyle Orton quarterbacking this offense no matter how well he is playing. Period.

I don’t care how well he is playing. I don’t care what his quarterback rating is. We are not winning games and we are not scoring points.

Some people say its crazy to bench Orton, I say you can make a legitimate case to do so even right now. Ten points, fourteen points, sixteen points? It’s unacceptable. We’re not firing the coach this year, we’re not going to bench the offensive line, but somebody has to be accountable for not scoring points and that somebody should be the leader of the offense. Orton isn’t playing too badly, and if we were 4 and 4 right now this wouldn’t even cross my mind. But we’re not scoring points and we’re not winning games. Starting Tebow after the next loss also doesn’t say all that much about Kyle Orton. I don’t care if Tebow absolutely lights it up out there. It would say a whole lot about the quarterback competition next year–we will know whether it’s actually a legitimate competition or not. If we don’t start Tebow after the next loss, we better get him in there more and get him throwing. If not, talk about a wasted season going forward and wasted opportunity for a quarterback we picked in the first round.

Happy Halloween. Watch out for razorblades in the Reeses. Never understood that one. I’ve smashed 146 pumpkins on Halloween night. Egged people, cars and houses, ruined lawn ornaments, sent large pumpkins flying out the window of a car going downhill so they roll, gain steam and slam straightway into the sides of some poor sap’s house going about 90 MPH… I’ve done some things in my time as a Dark Ninja of the Depths, but I’ll never put garbage in a kid’s candy on Halloween. Are you *%(&*in me? You gotta be an absolute sick, depraved loser on the level of a degenerated sea slug to go down that road.

Broncos 16 49ers 24 Final Score

Sunday, October 31st, 2010
Kyle Orton Dejected

London, England - October 31: Kyle Orton #8 of Denver Broncos looks despondent during the NFL International Series match between Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers at Wembley Stadium on October 31, 2010 in London, England.

The Denver Broncos are a bad team.

That penalty during the Gaffney touchdown, that penalty on the kick return?

That’s what happens to bad teams. Bad teams don’t get the breaks, they don’t have the luck, they get penalized and burnt deep on the most ridiculous toss up on a wing and a prayer throws.

Can someone, anyone clue me in on why Jarvis Moss is still on this roster?

Orton came back and performed a little better in the second half. You see those stats, eh? Great stats, eh? Great rating, oh he’s just killin’ it out there ain’t he. Sixteen points. Oh that’s just the tops. Too bad the stats don’t translate into touchdowns or wins. Like I’ve said, 24 to 28 points equals wins in this league, it equals wins when you have an average defense. Score anything less and good luck.

Did anyone think we were going to drive the field and tie the game in the final seconds? I didn’t. Orton may be a decent game manager, he may show flashes of brilliance but he’s not clutch with the game on the line.

This whole team cannot put it together. Once one thing begins to work, something else goes afoul time and time again.

Is there anyone out there, anyone left who honestly believes the 2010 Denver Broncos will make the playoffs? I understand that there’s still technically a chance, but does anyone think this team will beat the Raiders at home? The Chiefs? San Diego? Does anyone really think this team is winning out and making the playoffs?

The writing is on the wall and it’s Tebow time. No, not like some goobers think, they think he’s going to save the season (well maybe save it from being boring). We need to see what this kid has, if he has anything. One more loss and it better be Tebow time, anything less is uncivilized. I want to see what this kid has out there at starting quarterback. Besides valuable game experience, we’re gonna be picking high next year and I want to see whether we need to draft a quarterback.

Well at least we’re back to playing Broncos football: losing games we should have won.

Broncos 0 49ers 3 at Halftime – I’m Fed Up

Sunday, October 31st, 2010
Kyle Orton

HONK

Zero points.

Zero points by our beloved Broncos at the half against the 1 and 6 Forty Niners.

I’ve had just about enough of this Broncos offense.

Same story. Same old story. The Broncos defense shows up, the offense doesn’t and then there’s this somewhat valiant drive with one minute left in the half where somebody wakes up.

I figured we’d throw Tebow in once we hit seven losses–I’m rethinking this.

Kyle Orton is ineffective at the quarterback position.

I have the right to say this, I’ve been an Orton supporter all along. Yes, I would rather have Orton than Jay Huckdort Cutler, at least Orton protects the ball.

I don’t care how many stats, I don’t care how many percentages you want to bring up, this offense is not moving the ball and does not score touchdowns.

Yes, our run blocking and running attack is the worst in the league, but this quarterback is not getting the job done. He is not scoring touchdowns and he is not winning games.

Our offense is not scoring touchdowns and we are not winning games. Period.

What are you going to do? Bench the offensive line? Fire the coach?

Probably not, but someone has to take the blame for an offense that is not moving the ball and an offense that is not scoring touchdowns.

You see that “sack” in the first half on an important third down? Pathetic.

Zero points against the Forty Niners in the first half. Zero.

I began watching this game as an unaffected observer and by the end of the half I ended up pretty pissed off. Our defense shows up early, time and time again and they have in most games all through last year and our offense fails to do anything whatsoever. The defense eventually wears down because too much is asked of them. I’ve had it with this offense and the blame has to fall on the quarterback, the field general.

This team needs an enema, especially on offense.

Quite honestly, I want to see what we have in our second stringer and I’m serious. Peter King be damned. He said McDaniels should be fired if he benches Orton. I don’t see why quite honestly. In terms of wins, losses and touchdowns–hell, even field goals–this Orton is not getting the job done. He is not moving this offense. I want to see if our second stringer has anything and on top of that I want to see if he has anything because the Broncos will be picking high.

If he doesn’t have anything, if our first round quarterback of the future doesn’t have anything, then we might need to draft a quarterback with that high pick.

The offense fails to inspire, and based on merit, this Orton isn’t getting the job done.

Broncos vs 49ers Preview: The Masquerade Bowl

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Dookie Bowl II

This Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London, England, we will witness two groups of 45 men masquerading as two professional NFL football teams.

The Brits are probably wondering what the hell they did to deserve such a peckered spectacle. The 1 and 6 Forty Niners and the 2 and 5 Broncos will compete in a dookie bowl of immense proportions and only one team will prove they are somewhat less crap-tastic than the other.

I happen to think Josh McDaniels did the right thing in postponing the Broncos journey to London this week. The Broncos will arrive in England on Friday, whereas the Forty Niners have been staying there throughout the week.

Getting in and getting the hell out is smart.

Dirty London

Why the hell would you subject your team to a bunch of dirty buildings, boiled potatoes and flapping gums filled with brown teeth for a full week? Bile laden gutters of stench, piss laden telephone booths full of disease–oh yeah that’s just wonderful. That’s just great I suppose we’ll just immerse ourselves in this stuff for a week. In fact, I bet the Forty Niners can’t wait to get the hell out of there by now. I could never understand the allure of walking around looking at old buildings. Old, dirty buildings, yeah that’s just wonderful. That’s exactly what I’d like to be doing right now.

Get in, and get the hell out. Hopefully with a win. Now that’s a good gameplan. Note to the Broncos: find the cheapest little dive selling halfway decent fish and chips and stick to it cause that’s as good as it gets. Anything else and you’ll feel ripped off. I’ll give the Brits credit where credit is due: they do a good cheap fish in chips wrapped in newspaper.

Can we beat a 1 and 6 team?

I repeat, can we beat a 1 and 6 team?

I’m not so sure.

I don’t really know. It all depends on what Broncos team shows up. If the Broncos in the Jets game show up then we’ll win, but if last weeks team takes the field then we’re doomed. I don’t care if Alex Smith is starting from off the bench, he’ll probably have the game of his life. He could be running, gunning and going hog wild out there at the Broncos expense for all we know. That’s all the preview you need to know: the Broncos show up or they don’t. They either play with some fire or they play down to the 49ers. We have the talent of a 10 and 6, 9and 7 team and we cannot put all the pieces together on Sundays  to perform with any consistency.

Can you imagine if Kyle Boller started last week? Probably the same exact result and they’d be talking quarterback controversy in Oakland right now.

This team has a lot of proving to do before I can take them seriously again. I want three wins in a row before I take them seriously. As it stands I’m just an unaffected observer, I’m not really expecting much out of this game. If we win, big deal, how about we beat the Chiefs? How about a three game winning streak? That’s what it’s gonna take for them to get off the snide–or at least somewhat.

In recent years this Broncos team has a problem with big games and division rivals. It dates back to the ass end of the Shanahan era, remember Shanny’s last game? That whipping by the Chargers in a game with playoff implications?

How about the final Chiefs game last year? Yet again, another game against a division rival with playoffs on the line.

Last week the game would determine which AFC West team has legitimate shot at catching the Chiefs– yet again the Broncos come out flat in another big game against a rival. I’m tired of this, something better be done about this cause something is rotten in Denmark.

Kyle Orton

HONK

I’ve heard talk about replacing the coach. That won’t happen anytime soon, but if the same team as last week keeps showing up it just might. People talk about getting a new coach who can motivate and all that jazz. We had Shanahan and now McDaniels and some of these problems are the same. I think it’s a lack of leaders on the field. We know we have Dawkins on defense, but who else? Where are the leaders on this team? We’ve got the “strong silent types,” in Champ, D.J. Williams and even Orton. I emphasize silent. Maybe we have too many of these silent types. There’s a lack of leadership on the field and it shows.

If we keep losing and I’m calling for the kid to play at quarterback plain and simple. To all those who say, ” He ain’t ready,” well how do you get ready? Riding pine?

What if Orton gets injured, do you want Brady Quinn taking over? Brady Quinn who was thoroughly outplayed by the rookie?

There’s a taint on the Kyle Orton show, like I said I question his leadership. What I saw Sunday–even though he was trying–didn’t inspire confidence. With all the glowing stats in the world between the 20’s he’s struggling when the defenses clamp down. Struggles in converting third downs and scoring in the red zone. Touchdowns and converting on third downs count, stats don’t.

The Broncos need to string together a few wins before I can take them seriously again. This starts with Orton leading the offense in touchdown scoring drives. Say what you want about the defense–yes they deserve their share of the blame, but scoring 17 points a game is unacceptable. We don’t have an all world defense, we have a decent defense, not a great one. It remains to be seen if we got what’s behind door number two with Wink Martindale. Like I said it looks like we picked the guy up from some Nascar event. I question his professionalism. But scoring only 17 points per game or less doesn’t cut it, we need 24-28 points a game to compete in this league. If we start losing I want us to put the kid in at QB. What some people don’t understand, is that it’s not a demotion of Kyle Orton in this case. No, you don’t start Tebow when we  still have the faintest chance at a playoff berth. But when those playoff hopes turn to a steaming pile of crap, there’s no reason for Orton to continue as the starter this year. Not to leave out the fact it would be boring as hell if he continues to do his Canadian Goose impression.

I’ll tell you some of these people didn’t see the same Tebow I saw in preseason. They probably just watched the ESPN highlights showcasing the interception and the fumbled snap. I saw a kid who had confidence, who threw the ball with zip and he had a very good deep ball. He also scored touchdowns. Say what you will about playing in the preseason–Brady Quinn, a guy with some actual NFL experience didn’t look nearly as good out there. I’m  telling you if the losses pile up it’s Tebow time, or it better be. QB controversy be damned.

ESPN recently apologized to England for sending the Broncos and 49ers over there, that’s how far the mighty Broncos have fallen. Some of the Broncos players said the problem with their poor performance isn’t on the coach. Well, if that’s the case,  I say way to stick up for him while talking to the press.

How about sticking up for him on the field?

Raiders vs. Broncos – The Aftermath

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Over thirty hours from that loss and I feel the same.

The coach isn’t going anywhere–but he will if this team giving this “effort.” Yeah we’ve been beaten soundly at times under McDaniels, but that was egregious.

I saw a team that didn’t believe in its coaches, didn’t believe in the game plan and ultimately a team that probably didn’t believe it could win. And if they did believe any of those things, they sure didn’t look like it out there.

I didn’t see any leadership out there. I saw a Canadian Goose in Orton. A goose honking around who probably couldn’t inspire a fart out of someone’s ass. He looked like the coach. Did you see McDaniels in the first half, eh? Looked like he was tired. He was peckered, that whole team was peckered. Knowshon Moreno showed a little enthusiasm, maybe too much. Note to Knowshon: Act like you’ve been there before. D.J. Williams showed a little fire on defense, other  than that it was pretty damn pathetic.

You know what I’d like to see? I’d like to see Brian Dawkins do something. Anything. I know he’s injured, but did you see the expression on his face when the camera panned to him in that game? There was no expression, looked as peckered as the coach. I heard Dawkins single-handedly “willed” the Eagles defense into the playoffs. Where the hell is that guy, eh? You know it’s bad when even the Wolverine gets de-clawed.

As atrocious as this whole debacle is, I’m wracking it up to an anomaly. We lost a bunch of games late last season and a whopping five losses out of the gate this season. In most of these games we’re at least close at the half. The Broncos have been competitive in these losses up until now… which begs the question why did they let such a horrendous fart last Sunday?

We could win the next two games. But do you feel confident we will?

Not me.

I think this team could go 6 and 3 at best–at best–in the second half of this season. 6 and 3 at best, finishing with an 8 and 8 record.

7 and 2? 8 and 1? Win all 9?

I don’t think so. Not the way we’re playing. Inconsistent and mistake ridden even when we do manage to put forth a valiant effort. Both Ayers and Dumervil out stings too badly. But we could right the ship somewhat going 6 and 3, we could set the tone for things to come–hopefully. This team needs a 10 and 6 record to make the playoffs, maybe 9 and 7 if they’re lucky and let’s be honest it ain’t happening.

That’s why I want to see Tebow in there once we drop another game. It won’t happen though. Oh I bet we’ll eventually drop two or three more games and then we’ll start him in week 13 or 14, something lame like that. Probably so a QB controversy doesn’t start brewing or so Kyle Orton doesn’t feel bad.

I respect Kyle Orton, I want him on this team but I question the fire in his belly. I question his ability to fire up and inspire confidence in his teammates. Plus, we pretty much know what we have with him. He’s a tough guy, he’s a game manager who is accurate but coming from behind isn’t his forte. And hey, I don’t expect him to, that’s not what he does. This team has trouble playing catch up and he’s the kind of guy who will give you mistake free play while sitting on a lead–most of the time anyways. He’s not a dynamic threat at the quarterback position. This offense moves the ball but has trouble scoring touchdowns–period. I don’t care one bit about stats. Remember how bad the Denver defense was in the stat department during the 97 Super Bowl run? They sucked in the stat department, but they didn’t give up touchdowns and that’s what counts. This offense isn’t scoring touchdowns, not enough of them to be competitive and the big playmakers on our defensive line are injured. It all amounts to a sobering, realistic view of the upcoming nine games.

Three touchdowns scored that quickly by the Raiders… you think we’re coming back from that? Heck yeah we could, maybe if the defense held the other team to three points for the rest of the damn game. The way this season is going, I want them to put in the kid at QB sooner rather than later, I want to see what he’s got. Hell, when we’re officially out of the playoffs it will be one of the only fun things left to look forward to. That and watching Hucky Dorts melt down up there in Chicago.

Kyle Orton can still bounce back from this. He can silence the chants of Tebow by leading drives that score touchdowns. This ship can be turned around and we could end up a  somewhat respectable 8 and 8. Tebow could get the start week 13, come in and play brilliantly and then lose the competition to Orton next season. Fine by me. But sooner, rather than later we should put in the kid and it’s no real demotion of Orton. Why should he play when the playoffs are out of the picture? What’s he gonna prove? The writing’s on the proverbial wall, and this team needs nothing short of  a miracle to reach 9 and 7.

I’ll say this, if this team only wins one more game this season it damn well better be the game on December 19th.

Huckdort’s House of Pain

Monday, October 25th, 2010

I’m willing to wager ol’ Jay Huckdort Cutler wants to come back to Denver the way they’re treating him up there in Chicago.

Did you hear Mike Martz fixed Huckdort’s interception problem, eh?

He fixed it by not giving Hucky enough time to throw.

When I saw the Huck’s sack total for this year I just about laughed my balls off.  Now it’s up to 27 sacks.

It’s Hucky’s House of Pain and I ain’t letting the Denver football team discourage me. Oh yeah, people can say the Huck’s team has a better record, but so what? That’s the worst 4 and 2 team in the league.

Huckdort Jay’s getting thrashed, bashed lumped and jumped up there in Chicago. Couldn’t have happened to a better Dort. You know, maybe it’s egregious still making fun of this goober, but nah… it ain’t. Not the way he left, not the way he acted. So he’s up there getting sacked and concussed behind a porous line, flailing about and failing to protect the ball as usual. Hey at least the Broncos can pass block, most of the time anyways. Hucky’s good for some comedy gold on Sundays, especially since he ain’t playing for us and his Timely Dorts ain’t on our dime.

By the way, the definition of a Timely Dort is an interception at the worst possible moment. A Killer Dort is a pick returned for a touchdown. Looks like Orton did his best impression of the Huckster yesterday.
