Broncos Sign DE Vonnie Holliday + More Roster Cuts

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

The Broncos signed defensive end Vonnie Holliday today. The 33 year old veteran is known as a good leader in the locker room and was cut by the Miami Dolphins in the spring to make way for younger talent.  Holliday can play 5 technique defensive end and nose tackle and has notched an average of 5 sacks per year throughout his 10 year career.

The recent Broncos roster cuts thus far include:

Friday’s Cuts DL Carlton Powell, DL Matthias Askew, LB Lee Robinson, CB Joshua Bell, CB Rashod Moulton, OG Kory Lichtensteiger, QB Ingle Martin, OT Clint Oldenburg, WR Nate Swift, RB Marcus Thomas.

Saturday(so far): DE Everette Pedescleaux, DE Nic Clemons, DE Tim Crowder, CB Tony Carter, RB Darius Walker, OG Mitch Erickson, WR Matthew Willis.

Update: TE Marquez Branson, S Vernon Fox, ILB Braxton Kelley, CB D.J. Johnson, DB Antwain Spann

Broncos Notes 8/23 Injury Report

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Details are scant so far, but after last nights Broncos vs Seahawks game there were a few injuries:

Rookie CB Alphonso Smith was seen with an ice pack around his left knee.

QB Chris Simms seems to have sprained his ankle.

DT Marcus Thomas has a shoulder injury and CB Tony Carter was limping on his left leg. Source: Denver Post

The Post also looks at Denver’s new pass rushing scheme and how the players are reacting to it, and Jeff Legwold analyzes last night’s game position by position.

This came in late last night to the site’s email asking to show it, I wasn’t going to post it at first, but I emailed it to Horvil and he said ok.

Broncos Acquire DE Le Kevin Smith

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Here’s the Denver Post’s report of the deal, this guy seems like he will add some much needed depth to the DE position.

“In the deal the Broncos have received receive Smith and a 7th-round pick in the 2010 draft. In exchange, New England will receive a fifth-round pick in the 2010 draft.”

In other possible breaking news, BroncoTalk noticed NFL Network’s Jamie Dukes wrote “Bombshell alert coming out of Denver,” on his Twitter page, and he claims fellow NFL Network reporter Jason LaCanfora will post the story on his blog later tonight.

Update: Not quite a “bombshell,” but someone in the Broncos PR supposedly told players not to be too excited about Marshall’s court victory after last week’s game and the organization apologized to Marshall for this. Obviously this doesn’t help any negotiations between the Broncos and Marshall.

Broncos Notes 8/17 Marshall and Dawkins Practicing

Monday, August 17th, 2009

ESPN:

Broncos WR Brandon Marshall and S Brian Dawkins are back on the field practicing. Wearing a cast on his broken hand, it is questionable whether Dawkins will play in this Saturday’s preseason game against the Seahawks.

Denver Post:

Mike Klis reports Brandon Marshall mentioned that Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White recently received a six year and million dollar contract.  The difference, is that White doesn’t have a history of legal troubles and the Broncos are apparently waiting to see whether Marshall is fully recovered from hip surgery as well.

Lindsay Jones spoke with S Brian Dawkins who claims he was very anxious watching the Broncos on television instead of being able to participate in last Thursday’s game due to a broken hand.

Woody Paige claims he has learned to live with Orton as the starting QB. He doesn’t seem all too enthusiastic about it either.

Colorado Springs Gazette:

Frank Schwab posts a quick rundown of Sunday’s Broncos training camp. Kyle Orton threw a couple good deep balls but then had one intercepted by S David Bruton.

DenverBroncos.com:

Josh McDaniels answers questions from the media following Sunday’s practice on the official team site.

I thought the Broncos had a decent showing last week despite Orton’s terrible throws. The 3-4 “disguised” linebacker rushing defensive scheme looks like a fun one to watch this year. It is much better than seeing all four Denver lineman almost completely neutralized while the opposing quarterback picks us apart. Hopefully the front seven’s play continues to be effective.

Is it just me, or does time start to really fly by once football season commences?

Brandon Marshall found Not Guilty

Friday, August 14th, 2009

The Broncos WR Brandon Marshall was acquitted by an Atlanta jury today in his misdemeanor battery trial.  Had he been found guilty, Marshall would have faced additional punishment with a long suspension from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Here’s to hoping Marshall’s history of off field incidents stay behind him.

Broncos Notes 8/12 Torain Train Derailed (again)

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Denver Post:

RB Ryan Torain was waived by the Broncos today after straining a knee ligament. Torain showed some skill as a running back, however he missed most of last year with a dislocated elbow and when he returned to play he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Jeff Legwold quickly points out rookie CB Alphonso Smith is coming along well, snagging an interception in a red zone defense practice today.

CBS4Denver:

More on Torain’s departure and the Broncos signed running back Marcus Thomas to take his place on the roster.

DenverBroncos.com:

Quotes from Head Coach Josh McDaniels and QB Kyle Orton following today’s practice.
